Cultural issues

Implementing e-learning is not just about overcoming technical problems. We see three types of cultural issues.

Your people are afraid

You, as a manager must understand that there will be resistance from your people against learning new things. They might think the new software your company wants to use has been brought in to improve efficiency, that they might be made redundant. Other common fears are:

  • that the new software cannot do what the old software can do
  • that they will not be able to learn it
  • that new procedures will be introduced, and that they may have to move to another team

Your people are not used to the concept of e-learning

Some of your employees may be older. Some of them are not familiar with the internet or new techniques. Or they have experienced the wrong type of e-learning, and by that we mean: lots of text, little or no interaction, or just a bunch of slides. So, they have no positive feelings about e-learning. Or they just want printed material, like a booklet.

Your internal training department is against it

They may not actually say it. But of course they are. They feel passed by. They feel that their job is now insecure, since their role has been taken over by some e-learning program. And they will not say this, but they will try to undermine your program.

How can you overcome these problems?
